1.How did German policy from January 1917 onward cause the United States to declare war?
2. Discuss how President Wilson could argue that his foreign policy was still committed to peace after he asked Congress for a declaration of war.
3. Assess the influence of the United States involvement in World War I on TWO of the following:
A. African Americans
B. Civil Liberties
C. Women
D. Business (Industries)
President Wilson's foreign policy was committed to peace throughout WW1, even after he requested a declaration of war from Congress. Although some might argue that the very action of asking for a declaration of war opposes the argument that Wilson was steadfast in his search for peace, such is not the case.
ReplyDeleteFor one, it took a combination of repeated offences for the United States to formally break off relations with Germany and proclaim that the United States had entered the war. Furthermore, idealist President Wilson hoped for a uniform peace, one without the winning country punishing the defeated, and made a list of "Fourteen Points" that he believed would help in creating an everlasting peace in the world. Contrary to the belief that he was all talk, Wilson valiantly lobbied for the inclusion of his "peace without victory" ideals and his "Fourteen Points" in the Treaty of Versailles.
One policy that is overlooked now is that in 1917 the war was not going well. The American public was very much neutral while Wilson in private was very supportive of the Allies. The turning point was when the Germans unrestrcited submarine warfare of January 1917 really started to impact the trading business America had with the former two. As it became clear that American boots on the ground were going to be needed to defeat Germany, Wilson already privately biased towards the English, made the move to ask congress to declare war.
ReplyDelete3.) Women:World War 1 was a pivotal time for women. This is because it gave women an opportunity to prove themselves in a male-dominated society, doing more than cleaning the house and tending to the children. With so many men going to war, there was a large gap in employment and, in response, women came in to replace the men. Some of the more well known roles of women in World War I include: nurses, munitions factory workers, sewing bandages, and selling war bonds, shipyards and spies. The Women's Royal Air Force was created, which is where women worked on planes as mechanics. By 1917 its was surveyed that 68% of women had changed jobs since the war began, 16% had moved out of domestic service, 22% that were unemployed in 1914 now had work and 23% had changed factories.
ReplyDeleteAfrican Americans:Between 1914 and 1920, roughly 500,000 black southerners packed their bags and headed to the North, fundamentally transforming the social, cultural, and political landscape of cities such as Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Detroit. The Great Migration would reshape black America and the nation as a whole.
Black southerners faced a host of social, economic, and political challenges that prompted their migration to the North. The majority of black farmers labored as sharecroppers, remained in perpetual debt, and lived in dire poverty. Their condition worsened in 1915–16 as a result of a boll weevil infestation that ruined cotton crops throughout the South. These economic obstacles were made worse by social and political oppression. By the time of the war, most black people had been disfranchised, effectively stripped of their right to vote through both legal and extralegal means.

ReplyDeleteIn January 1917 Germany reinstated its policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. Any ship, including unarmed passenger liners, was susceptible to attack without warning. In March, British intelligence intercepted a telegram from Germany to Mexico hinting at a possible alliance between the two countries where Germany would aid Mexico in reclaiming lands lost if Mexico would fight alongside Germany. Soon after, as a demonstration of its naval policy, Germany sank five unarmed American merchant ships. In response to these events, on April 2, 1917, President Wilson asked Congress to recognize the existence of a state of war between the United States and Germany.
ReplyDeleteGermany instituted its own blockade in response to the British blockade in 1914. After the sinking of a third unarmed ship with American passengers in 1916, Germany issued the Sussex pledge, promising to not sink any more merchant or passenger ships without due warning. The pledge was kept until January 1917, when the original policy of unrestricted submarine warfare resurfaced. Germany felt that by cutting off supplies it could end the war on its terms before the United States could react. Shortly afterward, the United States cut off diplomatic relations with Germany, a step preparatory to war.
In March 1917, American newspapers reported of a secret offer from Germany to Mexico. British intelligence had become aware of a telegram that proposed a Mexican alliance with Germany in exchange for a German pledge to help Mexico recover former lands. This note, known as the Zimmermann Telegram, aroused American nationalist furor and convinced President Wilson that Germany expected war with the United States. Later that month, Germany sank five merchant ships, a strong demonstration of its submarine warfare policy.
Though President Wilson won reelection on a campaign that touted his commitment to neutrality, he asked a special session of Congress to declare war on Germany on April 2, 1917. In addition to the revelation of the Zimmermann Telegram and the sinking of the merchant ships, the Russian Revolution occurred, deposing the czar and creating a republic. Since Wilson wanted to fight the war with the purpose of making the world safe for democracy, it bothered him that Russia, one of the Allied nations, was ruled by an autocrat. This barrier to U.S. involvement was removed with the uprising.
Good information. You used important details and did not get off track. GOOD JOB!
DeleteWonderful context and so much information. you stayed on the main topic as well.
DeleteQUESTION # 1
ReplyDeleteIn January of 1917, Germany announced unrestricted submarine warfare - that is, they wouldn't bother to check whether the ships they were going to destroy were military or civilian. They would just fire at will without checking for innocent people, supplies for them or a medical boat. President Woodrow Wilson broke all diplomatic relations with Germany, but didn't and wouldn't go to war unless Germany specifically attacked Americans. Which is what they did by sinking four vessels with Americans onboard.
The turning point was when the Germans unrestrcited submarine warfare of January 1917 really started to impact the trading business America had with Britain and French. As it became clear that American needed to battle on ground than jn the ocean if they were going to defeat Germany. President Wilson already privately biased towards the English, made the move to ask congress to declare war. The unrestricted submarine warfare had nothing to do with poor innocent American losing their lives but rather protecting the economic investment and trade made with the Allies.
Nice! Great Information

Renewed its policy of unrestricted submarine warfare that she had abandoned in 1915.all ships suspected of trading with British including the US would be targeted and sunk without warning. The German eventually sink the Lusitania.
In Feburary the British gave the america ambassador in London a copy of a telegram they intercepted from Germany. The telegram was sent by Arthur Zimmerman, a German foreign Secretary. the telegram was intended for the ambassador of Mexico. the telegram stated that German and Mexico should become allies against the US and German would give Mexico back lost land in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico if tht are victorious.
Outstanding job! Great Information, a few capitalization mistakes, but over all good

Good Job Destany. I learned something new. But, its suppose to be 2 paragraphs not one.
DeleteHow did German policy from January 1917 onward cause the United States to declare war?
ReplyDeleteOn January 17,1917 President Wilson ended up declaring war against the Germans. But Around that time the Germans had a renewal on their policy unrestricted submarines warfare. Which had targeted all ships trading with the British even neutral countries. That neutral countries also included the United States. By targeting them that meant sinking their submarines without warning or regard.
Another thing that made the U.S wanted to go to war was that one of the american ambassador in London sent a letter copy of the intercepted German telegram. The telegram came from the German foreign secretary to schedule war with the U.S. And Germany and mexico would join alliances and Germany will fund mexico conflict with the U.S. If they won mexico will regain all of their lost territories of Arizona,Texas and New Mexico. The telegram ignited a public feud toward the German and mexico and em flamed by the U.S losing four US merchant ships and 15 Americans live through a torpedo attack from the Germans.
Great detail but you shouldn't start a sentence with "BUT" other than that good job.

Germany also announcede the unrestricted submarin warfare. Wilson broke all diplomatic relations with Germany. He didn't and wouldn't go to war unless Germany attacked the Americans. Which they did by sinking four vessels with Americans onboard.

ReplyDeleteOne policy that is overlooked now is that in 1917 the war was not going well. The American public was very much neutral while Wilson in private was very supportive of the Allies. In March the Russian Tzar abdicated and left the Allies seriously troubled as to how much longer they could count on the the Russians tying up troops on the Eastern front. America had been supplying for years now the Allies with their explosives, guns, and ammunition, not to mention enough in loans to cover both France and GB entire war effort.
When the U.S. declared war on Germany it was because the British-French Alliance was losing the war that the Americans were so far financing.

#1.How did German policy from January 1917 onward cause the United States to declare war?
ReplyDeletePresident Wilson showed up in a joint session of Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany in order to "make the world safe for democracy." America join the violent war that been around since 1914. The unrestricted submarine warfare postponed the plot to request aid from Mexico. All ships that are trading with Britain, including those of neutral countries like the United States would be targets for their submarines and would be sunk without warning. The British gave the American ambassador in London a copy of an intercepted German telegram. President Wilson realized war was inevitable. Mexico canceled the alliance with Germany. Germany would fund Mexico's conflict and help regain the territory of Arizona.
Good Job Aaron!
DeleteDiscuss how President Wilson could argue that his foreign policy was still committed to peace after he asked Congress for a declaration of war.
ReplyDeleteOn March 1, 1917, the Zimmermann Telegram, in which Germany encouraged Mexico to enter the war on the side of the Central Powers. April 1, 1917, when the armed U.S. steamer Aztec was torpedoed near Brest and 28 crew members drowned.President Woodrow Wilson pledged to keep the country out of the conflict, arguing that the United States had nothing to with the European chaos. Wilson won the re-election in 1916 on a campaign of neutrality. Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic Ocean and sank several vessels carrying American passengers. The next day, Wilson stepped before Congress to deliver his historic war message, making clear exactly how high he considered the stakes of the war to be. It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war, into the most terrible of all wars, civilization itself seeming to be in the balance. Despite the risks, Wilson felt like the U.S. could not wait any longer.
Discuss how President Wilson could argue that his foreign policy was still committed to peace after he asked Congress for a declaration of war.
ReplyDeletePresident Wilson requested a declaration of war from Congress. Although some might not agree with his actions of asking for a declaration of war opposes the argument that he (Wilson) was steadfast in his search for peace. It took a combination of repeated offences for the United States to formally break off relations with Germany and proclaim that the United States had entered the war. President Wilson hoped for a uniform peace, one without the winning country punishing the defeated, and made a list of “Fourteen Points” that he believed would help in creating an everlasting peace in the world. Wilson valiantly lobbied for the inclusion of his “peace without victory” ideas and his “Fourteen Points” in the Treaty of Versailles.
Before the United States joined the war, President Wilson’s policies leaned more toward peace. He did everything in his power to try and prevent the United States from entering the First WW1. President Wilson didn’t support Germans interference with the right of American merchants to sell goods not intended for warfare, but only chastised the Germans. If he desire, Wilson could have declared war because of this intrusion, but he kept his cool. When the Germans torpedoed ships, the Lusitania in particular, causing the deaths of innocent Americans, Wilson sent a notice to Germany saying that he was unhappy. The Germans apologized, but serenely stated that they had every right to torpedo the ships because they were carrying contraband. Wilson tried to leave that festering issue alone, but when the Germans continued torpedoing ships, President Wilson threatened to end relations. As result to that, the Sussex Pledge was written; and after the Sussex Pledge was made, German and American’s relations improved while British and American relations deteriorated. When Great Britain announced that the “Allies would not welcome Wilson’s mediation relations as long as they had any hope of a military victory”. President Wilson was crushed, and he began to believe that the Allies wanted a malicious peace, not just a settlement as he yearned for.
Very Informative!!! Good Job!!

ReplyDelete1.How did German policy from January 1917 onward cause the United States to declare war?
ReplyDeleteOn January 1917, Germany renewed there policy on unrestricted submarine warfare. Germany had abandoned this policy due to the sinking of Lusitania in 1915. All ships trading with Britain, including those of neutral countries such as the United States would be targets for their submarines.Germany was sinking ships left and right without any warning. Germany owned the seas.
There was a telegram sent out from Germany to mexico in Febuary. The telegram came from the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmermann. Zimmermann was sending the telegram to the German ambassador of Mexico. Germany was basically' saying that Germany and Mexico were going to team up and get Mexico's land back from the United States. But some how the British intercepted the telegram and the telegram got sent to the United States. The release of the information that was in the telegram infuriated the U.S.
Question 1
ReplyDeleteSee Germany had renewed there policy on submarine warfare. They basically renigged on their policy they sunk the lusitania. All ships would now be targets if the came to far into the area where the ports were located the would be sunk also even they are neutral or allies of britian.
Also another reason why the foreign policy was gone because of the telegram that was meant for mexico. See Germany was trying to get mexico to help them but it was intercepted by britian. Them after it was intercepted they told the united states so that's what made in gone also

ReplyDelete1.How did German policy from January 1917 onward cause the United States to declare war?
ReplyDeleteIn February, the British gave the American ambassador in London a copy of an intercepted German telegram. The telegram came from the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmermann, to the German ambassador to Mexico. Zimmermann proposed that in the event of war with the US, Germany and Mexico would join in an alliance. Germany would fund Mexico's conflict with the US. With victory achieved, Mexico would regain their lost territories of Arizona, Texas and New Mexico. Release of the telegram caused a huge flame by the loss of four US merchant ships and 15 American lives to German torpedo attacks.
Wilson realized war was inevitable but debated over the decision for what it might do to the spirit of the nation. He feared war would change America forever, making it tougher, less humane. "Once lead these people into war, and they'll forget there ever was such a thing as tolerance ... the spirit of ruthless brutality will enter into the very fiber of our national life ... every man who refused to conform would have to pay the penalty."
On the evening of April 2, 1917, President Wilson appeared before Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany in order to "make the world safe for democracy." On April 4, Congress granted Wilson's request.
Great work. Keep it up!
Delete2. Discuss how President Wilson could argue that his foreign policy was still committed to peace after he asked Congress for a declaration of war.
ReplyDeletePresident Wilson strongly argued that his foreign policy was strictly committed to peace despite asking Congress to allow the United States to declare war against Germany and join the Triple Entente. This could be true, while it could also be false. President Wilson originally brought up his foreign policy near the beginning of World War I. He had no intention to join the war but he did believe in being a mediator for the countries that were fighting. He wanted the United Stated to play the peace maker in this war, but it didn't exactly turn out like that.
President Wilson wanted the United to be the neutral peace maker but there were events and actions that prevented and contradicted that. Firstly, although the United States were supposed to stay out of the war and remain neutral, we ended up causing more problems by selling weapons and supplies to both sides. While we did this, we were somewhat bias by selling the Triple Entente weapons and supplies for lower prices than they sold them to the Triple Alliance. Also, Germany did some things that caused the United States to join the war on the Triple Entente's side. Germany was bombing and sinking any ship that could possibly be bringing supplies, weapons, or other items that could help Britain, or it's allies, win. During these war tactics, Americans were being killed. President Wilson warned Germany to stop numerous times but the did not stop. Germany also tried to convince Mexico to declare war against the United States through telegram, which was intercepted by Great Britain.

How did German policy from January 1917 onward cause the United States to declare war?
ReplyDeleteIn January of 1917 Germany was practicing unrestricted submarine warfare which meant they were sinking any foreign ship with out caution or reasoning. Germany supposedly abandoned this policy in 1915 but decided to renew it and would sink any submarine from countries that traded with Great Britain (even neutral countries like America) as they were thought to be a threat. This would of course cause conflict with other countries, particularly The United States of America. The President during that time was Woodrow Wilson had tried with many efforts to stay neutral. He sent a warning to Germany but it was not effective.
Britain used their own tactics, which can be classified as instigation by the opinion of some, by intercepting a letter that was sent from Germany to Mexico which was prompting Mexico to declare war on America and in return Germany would give them back the land they lost in the Spanish American war. After all of this senseless commotion President Wilson finally went to Congress and asked to declare war on Germany on April 2nd of 1917 and his request was granted two days later on April 4th.

In January of 1917 Germany reestablished their policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. This policy was enforced because on May 7, 1915 a German U~Boat attacked an America ship called the Lusitania. The policy basically states that Geman U-Boats couldn't attack merchant ships without a warning. In Feburary Authur Zimmerman, a German Foreign Secretary, sent a telegram to Mexico. The telegram states Germany wants to become an alliance with Mexico. If Mexico decides to become an alliance with Germany, they will help Mexico regain their territories. Arkansas, New Mexico and Texas.
