  1. 5)When the English established their first American colony in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, the Chesapeake Bay region included three major Native chiefdoms, systems of government made up of a group of tribes under the influence of a central chief. The three chiefdoms included the Powhatan, the Piscataway, and the Nanticoke. Most of the tribes living in the Chesapeake Bay region belonged to one of these three chiefdoms, although there were some tribes who kept their independence.

6)During the fifteenth century, Europe began a process of unprecedented
expansion that by 1650 had affected all areas of the world. This was actually
part of a global tendency towards complexity among many human societies.
Matching the empires of the Aztecs, the Inca, and the West Africans were
rising states on the Eurasian fringes such as Japan or the European monarchies
in England, France, Spain, and Portugal. In Eurasia, developing navigational
technology, along with expanding trade, encouraged long sea voyages by Arabs,
Japanese, Chinese, and Europeans. But only the Europeans linked up all the
continents in a new global age, when sea power, rather than land-based armies,
was the main force in empire-building.

  2. 5) The nature of the colonial encounter between English newcomers and Algonquian natives in the Chesapeake was calm at first. The Algonquian natives started out helping the English colonists. They taught them how to survive and traded items with them. Then it got fierce. The Algonquian natives and the English colonists began to fight each other until the daughter of a Powhatan chief's daughter was kidnapped by the English Settlers. This being significant because of the fact that the Powhatan were one of the three Algonquian tribes.

    6) There were many factors that contributed to Europe's expansionist impulses. One of those factors was power. It was thought If there is more land under your control, then you were more powerful. You had control of the crops and other items that came from that area. This also leads to the next factor, money. With all the crops in these new places, the more money you can make selling them. The final factor is curiosity. With expanding to new places, there is exploring of those places and new discoveries to me made. When you find a new place, you always wonder what is in that new place.

  3. 5)Between the English newcomers and Algonquian natives the encounter was productive but soon ended. Jamestown colonists saw themselves as conquistadors and were unable to support themselves. The English colonists were not adapt at farming in the North American soil and climate, so they lacked the skills for surviving in a unfamiliar territory. Many died of starvation. The Powhatan people took pity on them and gave them food to help them survive. It did not remain peaceful for long though. At first, the Indians gave the English permission to live on pieces of land within their territories. The English saw this as a right to own and permanently occupy the land, but the Native people believed that the newcomers had no right to possess their land. Soon a series of wars started in the Chesapeake Bay region that continued through the seventeenth century.

  4. 6) Factors that contributed to Europe’s expansionist impulses were industrial and agricultural production changes, it was beneficial to the American economy, and presented new challenges. Another factor that contributed to American expansion was idealism. Idealism emerged in the 1890s rooted in the belief that American civilization and Protestant “Christianity” possessed great potential to uplift so-called “backward peoples.” Many Americans have pursued this goal of spreading democratic and/or religious ideas to those whom they considered to be less fortunate. The Frontier Thesis was another factor that accounted for the course of American imperialism because it crystallized many of the hopes and desires that Americans possessed during the last decade of the nineteenth century.

  5. Question#6 There are indeed a few factors that contributed to Europes expansionist impulses. The early pressures for expansion across the continent emphasized the desire for land, agriculture, and natural resorces like: wood ,water, minerals, fossil fuels, and markets for those products. Economic was dominant, but the missionary aspect was present as well. In the time it lead to the penetration of european domination to every continent of the globe. The changing development of manufactoring, the realated need for continental underlying of transport, and growth of merchant marine, and the financial profits of all these activities combined to create so much pressure. All of these things contributed to Europes expanionist impulses.

  6. 5) Colonialism produced complex and traumatic cultural encounters between indigenous peoples and the newcomers. Europeans engagements with the inhabitants of the overseas colonies resulted in complex and ambiguous cultural formations that reveal the contested, fragmentary, and anxious nature of colonial knowledge and power. The Chesapeake region offers much to those interested in understanding the culture histories of Native societies. The written accounts produced by European sources during the early years of the colonial era highlight the actions of Powhatans and Monacans, some of who competed for wealth, power, and influence.

    6) In the fifteenth century, the New World was the greatest landmark which the Europeans moved Western. The movement shifted in Europeans life from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic seaboard. The leadership in European political and economic life was coming more and more in to the hands of Portugal, Spain, France, and England. All of these nations had monarchies that were growing in strength, increasing their control over the various classes within the state, and consolidating their hold over the territories subject to them. The state of technology was adequate to the task. At the start of the fifteenth century, European ships were inferior to those used by Arab and Chinese traders.
