  1. In what ways did the Second Great Awakening and religion influence the reform movements of the period of 1820 to 1860?

The Second Great Awakening was a Protestant revival movement during the early 19th century in the U.S. The movement began around 1790, but began to prosper by 1800.The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival led by the preacher Charles G. Finny. This religious revival called for people to repay God and show their appreciation to God with good deeds for all the things he has done for them. The Second Great Awakening gave families hope and faith that when the churches were reformed, sinners, drunks and criminals would be awakened . Women really wanted there to be a law forbidding liquor, because women stated that liquor made men corrupt, destroyed families, led to crime, and even led to death and suicide.

During the time period between 1825-1850, ideals of equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness defined democracy and surfaced the U.S through a series of reform movements that emerged in the antebellum era. Reform movements during this period of Jacksonian Democracy attempted to dissolve disunity and pushed for equal rights among all citizens. From the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century, many of these reforms were by religious ideals over democratic principles. These reforms were from the desire to make America a civilized, utopian society. The main types of reforms in this era were social reforms, religious reforms, institutional reforms, and abolitionist reforms.

  2. Transcendentalism was a movement in philosophy, literature, and religion that emerged and was popular in the nineteenth century New England because of a need to redefine man and his place in the world in response to a new and changing society.Transcendentalism is a belief in a higher reality that could be perceived. The concept of transcendence was first developed by Plato. He believed in existence of absolute goodness, one beyond description. He stated that it could be perceived only through intuition rather than logic or rationality. Ralph Waldo Emerson would later use Plato's other theory that the world is an expression of spirit to develop his theory of correspondence. Kant was the first one to state that God and soul are transcendent. The innate principles with which mind gives form to its perceptions and makes experience intelligible are transcendental. German idealists, such as Fichte, Schelling, Husseri were influenced by Kant who in turn inspired New England transcendental philosophers.Transcendentalism served as a metaphysical basis to explain and justify newfound democracy.

  3. The economic changes in America society encouraged many different reform movements to occur. The women's rights movement was greatly encouraged by economic changes in American society. The public education reforms weren't really affected by economic changes in American society. Some economic changes that encouraged a variety of reform movements to occur were urbanization, industrialization, immigration, and women being able to work. Elizabeth Cady Stanton worked very hard for women's rights and was encouraged by the 2nd Great Awakening, industrialization, and working women. The women's rights movement may not have occurred if there hadn't been any economic changes in American society.Public education reforms were led by Horace Mann who was the secretary of the board of education. Having children working on machines due to industrialization led to Mann wanting to educate them rather than have them work. Mann though that public schools would be best if there was a diversity of children in the schools.Public education was not encouraged all that much by changes in American society, but were influenced mildly.
The economic changes in American society encouraged some reforms, discouraged other reforms, or didn't affect the reforms. The women's rights movement was encouraged by the changes, but took a very long time for women to get equal rights. Public education reform wasn't affected that much, but took a short time for public schools to improve. Economic changes in American society during the 1800's were for the most part good for America, and led to many people starting reforms. With many people starting different reforms, people in America could work for better rights, or further their beliefs and try to reform the way America was run.

  4. 1.In what ways did the Second Great Awakening and religion influence the reform movements of the period of 1820 to 1860?

The Second Awakening and religion influenced quite significantly. The Second Great Awakening encouraged people to technically cleanse America of its sinfulness and return it to its pure state. This lead to many reform movements. Each reform movement had its own religious reason as to why what they were trying to change was wrong. The Abolitionist Movement was because slavery was morally wrong and because it was felt that the treatment of slaves as well as slavery was sinful and wrong.

The Temperance Movement wanted to prohibit alcohol and prostitution because it lead to the sins such as lust and wrath. When men drank alcohol, they would become intoxicated and return home and rape and beat their wives and maybe even their children. Prostitution allowed mean to show lust and to commit adultery, just like slavery did, except it cost more. Education reform was to give every child the ability to receive proper education and discipline. This was because people began to believe that children were unruly and illiterate which could lead them to commit sins.

  7. The Second Great Awakening was a religious movement during the early 19th century. The Movement was led by Charles Finney, the Father of Modern Revivalism. The Movement began in 1790, but it started to increase from 1790 till the 1840's. This called people to turn their life over to God and rid the states of their sins. Women played a crucial role during this time. During this time men were the more dominant than women.
The Women's right's movement wasn't just about suffrage ( right to vote). The women wanted equal rights, which means that women should be treated equally. Also women wanted to prohibit the usage of alcohol. This is because their husbands would abuse them physically and mentally. 8. The women's rights movement was encouraged by economic changes in American society. Women being able to work was encouraged. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony worked very hard for women's rights. It took women a long time for them to get there equal rights. Industrialization allowed women to start working. Women where not treated the same as men even thought women were doing the same kind of work.

Horace Mann was the forerunner of the public education movement and was encouraged by industrialization, and working children. Children work in factories on machines due to industrialization.Horace Mann wanted to educate them besides, them working. If there was different ethnic groups in place at the school the children will learn better. Industrialization had children working, and left men out of jobs.During this time children worked for less. And with the children going to school more jobs would open up for the jobless.

  9. Question:In what ways did the Secon Great Awakening and religion influence the reform movements of the period of 1820 to 1860?

The Second Great Awakening inspired the establishment of many reform movements intended to cure the evils of society before the anticipated Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The Second Great Awakening expressed Arminian theology, by which every person could be saved through revivals, repentance, and conversion. It enrolled millions of new members in existing evangelical denominations and led to the formation of new denominations. Many converts believed that the Awakening heralded a new millennial age.

The idea of restoring a "primitive" form of Christianity grew in popularity in the U.S. after the American Revolution. This desire to restore a purer form of Christianity without an elaborate hierarchy contributed to the development of many groups during the Second Great Awakening, including the Mormons, Baptists and Shakers. Several factors made the restoration sentiment particularly appealing. To immigrants the land in the United States seemed pristine, edenic and undefiled the perfect place to recover pure, uncorrupted and original Christianity and the tradition bound European churches seemed out of place in this new setting.

The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival in America. It was formed after the change in the economy and popular alcoholism. Canals and railways revolutionized the economy and decreased the amount of subsistence farming. People also drank alcohol a lot because it was considered safer than water or milk. This resulted in people trying to reform and create utopian societies that would remove them from the overwhelming changes in the market and alcoholism.

  11. 1.) the Second Great Awakening was a social meeting that influenced people to convert to Christianity. It influenced people to Christrianity because, the people that preached in the meeting had used the proof of the bible that the people of America should obey the bible and should do what the says. The people that recited the meeting said that slaves should obey their masters and obey the bible. The Great Awakening had changed the country dramatically. Although it was a small meeting it had changed the country little by little but has changed it a lot later in its time.

The religon had opened reform movements such as (one of them) Women's Suffrage. It happened when other ideas were being thought of (for example to become free of slavery and other ideas). When Women wanted to be equal to man (or men) they wanted everything as a normal person (such as able to own property, able to vote, etc.). Later in the 1900's women became equal and the 19th Amendment was created and later women became as equal as any man was.

Many early American religious groups in the Calvinist tradition had emphasized the deep depravity of human beings and believed they could only be saved through the grace of God. The new evangelical movement, however, placed greater emphasis on humans' ability to change their situation for the better.
