  1. How did the belief of Manifest Destiny influence U.s politics and policies in the 1840's ?

Manifest Destiny was the belief widely held by Americans in the 19th century that the United States was destined to expand across the continent. Manifest Destiny was about getting more land from sea to shining sea. In the 1840's, the U.S. annexed Texas, won land from Mexico in the war, and settled the Oregon Territory dispute with the British and started settling there.Manifest Destiny was an explanation or justification for that expansion and westward movement, or, in some interpretations, an ideology or doctrine which helped to promote the process. This article is a history of Manifest Destiny as an idea, and the influence of that idea upon American expansion.

Manifest destiny provided the dogma and tone for the largest acquisition of U.S. territory. It was used by Democrats in the 1840s to justify the war with Mexico and it was also used to acquire portions of Oregon from the British Empire. But Manifest Destiny always limped along because of its internal limitations and the issue of slavery, says Merk clarify, and never became a national priority. By 1843 John Quincy Adams, a major supporter, had changed his mind and repudiated Manifest Destiny because it meant the expansion of slavery in Texas.

  2. Compare and Contrast the expansionist policies of president Jefferson and president Polk?

Jefferson foreign policy reflected his feelings for France as in result in the Louisianan Purchase in 1803.Which expanded the U.S more than it already was. Also Jefferson opened up many new economic opportunities for the united states. One of them was when he made New Orleans part of the u.s.And making the Mississippi river open for trade transportation.
Polk also did some things to expand the u.s like when he pushed for the annexation of Texas.Which was the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Then the establishment of the Oregon territory,an California was made apart of the U.S in 1848.Also gold was founded by Polk in that same time.So both Polk and Jefferson strengthen the United States.

  3. 2. Compare and contrast the expansionist policies of President Jefferson and President Polk?

Thomas Jefferson acquired an interest in western exploration early in life. His father Peter was a surveyor, map maker, and land speculator on the Virginia frontier. Jefferson spent his childhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the western edge of the Virginia Piedmont. Though he never physically ventured beyond the Virginia Blue Ridge, Jefferson had a life-long commitment to supporting western exploration and asserting American claims to western lands. More than most of his contemporaries, Jefferson realized that the American West was not an empty wilderness, but a land crowded by conflicting nations and claims of sovereignty. Even before holding national office, Jefferson tried on several occasions to organize expeditions to the west. While president, Jefferson successfully acquired the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803 and sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1803–1806) on a mapping and scientific exploration up the Missouri River to the Pacific. He also sent other expeditions to find the headwaters of the Red, Arkansas, and Mississippi rivers and to gather scientific data and information on Native Americans.

The expansionist eleventh President of the United States, James K. Polk was perhaps more responsible than any other single person for setting the boundaries of what came to be the American West.Although thousands of Spanish and Mexican documents showed that Texas' western boundary had traditionally been the Nueces River, Polk backed the Texans' claim that their western border was the Rio Grande. Since Texas claimed the river all the way to its source, their position implied that half of present-day New Mexico and Colorado was rightfully theirs. The Mexican government found this unacceptable and refused the United States' offer of about forty million dollars for New Mexico and California. When U.S. General Zachary Taylor led an army across the disputed area to the banks of the Rio Grande in 1846, Mexican troops attacked his units and killed sixteen of his men. Polk seized upon this incident as proof of Mexican treachery, and quickly secured a declaration of war from Congress.

  4. How did the belief of Manifest Destiny influence U.S. politics and policies in the 1840's?

Manifest Destiny was a belief widely held by Americans in the 19th century that the United States was destined to expand across the continent from sea to shining sea. This was used to explain the need of expansion beyond the Louisiana Territory. Manifest destiny gave rise to the expansion into the western part of the United States. This also was a big reason for the civil war as there was a debate whether slavery was to be allowed in the new states and territories out west.
“Manifest Destiny “ was first used by Jackson Democrats after 1854.This idea of Manifest Destiny strongly influenced people and the policies of the U.S. government. Americans believed that they were bringing God, technology and civilization to the lands in the west. The result of the Manifest Destiny is a source of pride and shame. Pride that America reached from the Atlantic to the Pacific and shame for how Americans stole and destroyed the land of the Indians and believed they had the right to do so because of the Manifest Destiny.

  5. How did the belief of Manifest Destiny influence U.S. politics and policies in the 1840's?

The manifest destiny theory was an idea that said that America was destined to rule the continent from coast to coast. This encouraged the government to expand west leading to conflicts with Native Americans. This also was a big reason for the civil war as there was a debate whether slavery was to be allowed in the new states and territories out west.
Manifest destiny gave the dogma and tone for the largest achievement of U.S. territory. It was used by Democrats in the 1840s to defend the war with Mexico and it was also used to acquire portions of Oregon from the British Empire. The Manifest Destiny was a belief held by the American people in the 1800's that the United States plan was to expand across the continent. The Manifest Destiny provided a principle for the largest territory. It gave a risen expansion to the west of the United States which includes states like Texas,New Mexico, Oregon and California. Many people who were moving to those areas were against slavery , but the south wanted to maintain a equal amount between slave states and free states. In 1843, John Adams a supporter of the Manifest Destiny decided to go against it because it meant increase of slavery in Texas.

  7. Compare and contrast the expansionist policies of President Jefferson and President Polk?

There were two presidents that did a great deal for our country in the area of expansion. These two presidents are Thomas Jefferson and James K. Polk. Though they had completely different policies on expansion and foreign affairs, both of them vastly expanded the country. Jefferson believed in the Monroe Doctrine. He was also a firm believer in the constitution. Jefferson took advantage of the opportunity to expand the nation when it was presented to him. He favored a constitutional amendment to grant the federal government the right to purchase land, when Napoleon offered to sell Louisiana. But he was persuaded to accept the offer without an amendment, which would take too long and Napoleon might withdraw the offer. The United States was surrounded by European owned areas: England had Canada, Spain had Florida, and France had Louisiana. Fearing a possible war Jefferson strengthened the army Jefferson not sure if the constitution justified the act of making this purchase struggled with the decision. He decided he didn't have much of a choice and accepted Napoleons offer.
On the other hand, President Polk often provided his own "opportunities" to expand the boundary of the US. He was an outspoken advocate of expansion and Manifest Destiny. Look at how he stationed the troops in the disputed land between Mexico and Texas. Was a firm believer in Manifest Destiny, which was the belief that the United States was predestined to control all of North America. When Polk ran in the 1844 election his campaign slogan was 54-40 or fight. Though he never got that boundary he did get a lot more in different parts of the country. After Texas revolted from Mexico Polk was easy to convince that the U.S. should step in and take Texas from Mexico.

  8. * How did the belief of Manifest Destiny influence U.S politics and policies in the 1840's.

Manifest Destiny was about getting more land from "sea to shining sea". In the 1840's, the U.S annexed Texas, won land from Mexico in the war, and settle the Oregon Territory dispute with the British and started settling there.
Expansion westward seemed very wonderful to many Americans in the mid-nineteenth century. Like the Massachusetts Puritans; courageous pioneers believe that America had great hope and dedication to stretch the boundaries of their noble republic to the Pacific ocean. Independence had been won in the Revolution and reaffirm in the war 1812. The joy and excitement of nationalism that traveled through the nation in the next two decades demand more territory. The "every an is equal" mentality of the Jacksonian Era fueled this optimism. Now with land/territory up to the Louisiana purchase explored, Americans headed west in droves.

  10. How did the belief of Manifest Destiny influence U.S. politics and policies in the 1840's?

Manifest Destiny was pride that characterized American nationalism in the nineteenth century. It was an idea to expand its boundaries over a vast area. Throughout the 1840's, Americans defended the idea of westward expansion by citing the "whites" of northern Europeans. The people were destined to spread. Advocates of Manifest Destiny argued.

The Mexicans, The Indians, and others in the western regions were racially unfit to be apart of an "American" community. By the 1840's, the idea of Manifest Destiny had spread throughout the nation. It was publicized by the "penny press" and the nationalist politicians. Advocates of Manifest Destiny disagreed about how far and by what reasons the nation should expand. Not everyone liked the idea of Manifest Destiny. Prominent politicians such as Henry Clay believed that territorial expansion would reopen controversy over slavery and threaten the stability of the country.

  12. Assess the role of TWO of the following in the development of the territories west of the Mississippi River between 1820 and 1860:
    Fur Traders
    Overland Trails
    Mining
    Farming

There were many things that played a role in the development of the territories west of the Mississippi River between 1820 and 1860. Two of those things that played a role in this development are Mining and Farming. Mining was an important reason to settle in the west. With mining, you now have a new way to make money by collecting natural resources such as coal and gold and sell it or use it to make products to sell and trade. Gold mining began in 1848 in California during what is today known as the California Gold Rush. Once people in the North and South heard about the gold in California, they came in large groups. Coal Mining, on the other hand, started before 1820 and was not as important as gold at this time.

Farming was another thing that played a role in the development of western territories beyond the Mississippi River. The areas that made up the North and South were becoming a bit crowded with new immigrants, slaves(in the south), and Americans. People believed that if they moved west, they would have enough land to farm with. Farming, being what started the country, would obviously expand to the west. After all, it was the way of making food and money.

  13. The fur trade is a worldwide industry dealing in the acquisition and sale of animal fur. Since the establishment of world market for in the early modern period furs of Boreal , polar and cold temperate mammalian animals have been the most valued. Historically it had a large impact on the exploration and colonization of Siberia, northern North America and the South Shetland and South Sandwich Islands. Today the importance of fur trade has diminished and is currently centered around fur farms and authorized wildlife hunting, but remains controversial due to the cruelty involved and conflicts with the tourism industry. Several animal rights organizations oppose the fur trade, while supporters often cite their methods as not being cruel, that the animal populations are abundant and their rights to practice a traditional lifestyle should be respected. The use of fur on some items today has been partly substituted by synthetic imitations.

Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, from an ore-body, lode, vein, coal, seam or reef, which forms the mineralized horizon and package of economic interest to the miner.

To gain access to the mineralized package within the lease area it is often necessary to mine through or remove to the side waste material which is not of immediate interest to the miner. The total movement of ore and waste, which also includes the removal of soil in some cases, is referred to as the mining process. Depending on the nature, attitude, and grade of the ore-body, it is often the case that more waste than ore is mined during the course of the life of a mine. The waste removal and placement is a major cost to the mining operator and to facilitate detailed planning the detailed geological and mineralization characterization of the waste material forms an essential part of the geological exploration pro-gramme.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the establishment of the Oregon Territory. While not all of these policies and treaties had present time effects, almost all of them had a long term effect on the United States. 17. The Manifest Destiny influenced U.S politics and policies in many different ways such as expansion, slavery and many wars that were current or up and coming. The Manifest Destiny as Americans know it, is the expansion in the mid 19th century of the U.S to the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the people who moved in the westward expansion were against slavery. The south also informed that they wanted to keep a balance between free states and slave states.
As free states grew the slave states grew also and so was America. Manifest Destiny influenced US policies both domestically and internationally. Laissez-faire was a policy based on the ideals of Manifest Destiny as it represented individualism and freedom from government prayers. The Pacific Policy and the US interventionist policy, justified the expansion of American influence beyond natural borders. These are some of the substantial amount of research about how the belief of the Manifest Destiny influenced the U.S politics and policies.

  19. 2. Compare and contrast the expansionist policies of President Jefferson and President Polk?
Jefferson was a believer in the Monroe Doctrine which basically said we will mind our own business. He was also a very firm believer in a strict interpretation of the constitution. He did not really want to expand the country, he wanted to keep the U.S relatively small and manageable and when the opportunity appeared to him he had a difficult time making the right decision. The U.S. was surrounded by European owned areas: England had Canada, Spain had Florida, and France had Louisiana. Since Jefferson feared a possible war he strengthened the army especially by Louisiana. This scared Napoleon, he was already in a war with England and didn’t even need the Louisiana Territory, so fearing a war with the U.S. and needing money for his war with England he offered to sell the whole Louisiana Territory. Jefferson took Napoleons offer.
Now Polk was a firm believer in Manifest Destiny, which was the United States, predestined to control all of North America. When Polk ran in the 1844 campaign slogan it was a 54-45 fight. Though he never got the boundary he did get a lot more in different parts of the country. After Texas revolted from Mexico Polk was easy to convince that the U.S. stop in and take Texas from Mexico.
Both Presidents greatly expanded the size of the U.S. Jefferson did so through the Louisiana Purchase and Polk did so through the annexation of Texas and the acquisition of the Southwest through the Mexican War. He also clarified U.S. control of the Pacific Northwest.
